While the neighbors (and neighborhood) leave a lot to be desired, the privacy from prying eyes is great. Jonathon keeps the local street gang happy (in drugs, chips, or gadgets), and they provide excellent protection from, well, everyone. Sure, occasionally there's a comatose ganger crashed amidst his chemlab, but you can't beat the energy of the place for working.

Personal:

Jonathon Samuels is a genius, and he knows it. While he can be charismatic and endearing, he can also come across as cocky, arrogant, or pedantic, especially to those he believes are unintelligent or exceptionally slow. To those who show considerable intelligence, he turns on the social charm and tries to gain their acceptance.

Due to his habitual drug use, Jonathon often has trouble sleeping, and exhibits many nervous ticks, from tapping his foot to cracking his knuckles. He also is prone to mood swings, from mild depression, anger, violence, and bouts of self-doubt or loathing, to periods of low-level mania and frenetic energy.

Jonathon is an extroverted socialite, though he develops few close friends. He prefers his companions disposable, especially women, though what friends he does develop he is very loyal to.

Background:

Jonathon Hunter Samuels was the eldest child of Serena Montclair and Geoffrey Samuels, mid-level managers for the Evo Corporation. His childhood was one of relative security and comfort in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia. Early on, Jonathon exhibited exceptional intelligence. His parents spared no expense on his schooling. His sister, Teresa, also tested highly, and they both were under a lot of pressure to meet the high expectations place upon them.

In middle school, during a routine physical, Jonathon displayed supernormal reaction speeds for his age. Further testing would reveal he had latent magical abilities (a class 0 physical adept), and his parents went through great expense to bring out these abilities. Numerous tutors, shamans, magicians, and occultists of various traditions failed to make any progress, and Jonathon grew frustrated. He also rebelled against the seeming irrationality of their practices (even the hermeticists), and he escaped into computers, technology, and the matrix. In this area, Jonathon showed great aptitude.

As an adolescent, Jonathon excelled in his studies in high school. His academic ability was a source of pride with him, and he strove to be smarter, and better, than the other students in his class. He even went so far as to convince his parents to allow him to obtain cognitive boosting bioware, a controversial procedure for a minor (as well as cybernetic replacements for his eyes and ears, a much more common procedure). His studies would pay off, and he'd earn a top academic scholarship to Drexel university, funded by Evo.

When he entered college, however, Jonathon fell prey to many of the vices that plagued young college men: drugs, women, and partying. At Drexel his performance was sub-par at best. He was placed on academic probation after his first year, and lost his scholarship after his second. He continued at the university - eventually obtaining his BSEE - helped along mostly by depending on such drugs as Long Haul and other stimulants to maintain his partying lifestyle.

Jonathon continued at university, not wanting to give up the lifestyle, ostensibly to obtain his MSEE. Unfortunately for Jonathon tragedy struck: his parents were both killed in what was labeled an "Industrial accident". By now, his parents were both director-level managers at Evo, and Jonathon was highly suspicious from the outset of there having been an "Industrial accident". He was able to obtain the coroner's report, and discovered they had both died from gunshot wounds.

Jonathon entered a short-lived state of severe depression, almost dropping out of school altogether. His friend - and fellow partier Anthony Pocliari - pulled him out of it, and Jonathon renewed his studies with a vigor. He managed to complete his MSEE the next year.

In the meantime he was attempting to find out what had happened to his parents; this would be Jonathon's first foray into the shadows. After several fruitless private investigators, Jonathon was introduced to Hairy Harvey, an ork known to "get things" for people. Hairy Harvey hired several skilled shadowrunners who dug up the dirt on his parents.

Jonathon's parents were killed in a botched corporate "turf war". Serena's division had recently audited another division, and was about to publish a damning report. The VP of the target division wanted to delay the report until after he had been extracted for another company (which he expected to be any day), and sent in a goon squad to sabotage their offices. He had used his own private security force, and they had mistaken Serena (who was working late) and Geoffrey (who was merely visiting her) for security, and the security team had not expected anyone to be present. Despite orders not to use lethal force, they had gone in hot. Serena and Geoffrey were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Jonathon would also learn that the VP, as well as the head of the security team, would go on to have tragic accidents of their own shortly after his parent's deaths.

This knowledge had a profound effect on Jonathon, in that he became highly cynical of the corporations in general. He had grown up under their auspice, but now he felt anger and betrayal, and was generally disappointed in their pettiness and culture of greed. He also, after having met real shadowrunners, began to idolize the shadow world. Upon graduation, he took a job in the university's tech lab. He also began his first forays into the shadows, mostly to fund his lifestyle, and provide for him and his sister (who was still 14). Hairy Harvey would set him up with his first contracts, and slowly introduce him to the world.

With his parents' deaths, Jonathon was also left with caring for his sister, still a minor. Jonathon was wholly unprepared for this, but took it upon himself to act as a surrogate father figure. At first, it went badly. Jonathon's attempts at misguided control fared poorly, and they had many fights (exacerbated by their bottled up anguish). Eventually they came to a grudging understanding: Jonathon would do his best to provide for her, while she would try not to get into too much trouble. Still, Jonathon was all too aware of the dangers on the street for a young, impressionable girl. Likewise, Jonathon tried to keep his shadowy secrets from her, causing him to live a double life.

Current Activities:

Jonathon currently resides, with his 16-year old sister, in a quiet low-rise Evo-owned apartment building in the Cedar Park area (part of a settlement package with Evo concerning his parents' deaths, he and his sister were reluctantly allowed to rent there until she turned 18). He maintains a public, legal presence, working 20 hours a week in the Drexel University Engineering Technical lab, as well as a private, shadow presence providing technical expertise, software, and occasional infiltration and B&E abilities to the shadowrunner community in Seattle.
